Boardman River Clean Sweep
Purla Rd DNR Illegal Dumpsite Cleanup Report
April 19, 2023

Every year, the BRCS identifies some problem that needs to be remedied and we make it our speical
project for the year. This year, we have decided to try to get all the illegal dumpsites in Grant Traverse
County cleaned up.

Five of us headed out to Mayfield on this cool, cloudy Wednesday morning to start this project.

1st, we separated all the metal from the rest of the trash and piled it up for later recycling.

2nd, we loaded all the big, heavy items into our PATAGONIA funded trailer and Karl and I took it
to the DNR disposal site on Mill Rd. There was a big meat smoker, freezer chest, sofa, foldable bed,
two LazyBoy chairs, a cabinet, three vacuum cleaners, two patio umbrellas, an office chair, and
lots of small appliances. We took all that plus 15 bags and totes of trash to Mill Rd. We estimate it
was 1200 pounds of debris that we took to Mill Rd.

While we were gone, the other 3 volunteers worked hard to bag as much of the trash as they could.
We all worked until noon and then loaded 52 bags and totes filled with trash tightly into the trailer.
These bags were so heavy that we had to get help carrying them. The second load was about 1800 pounds

There was not enough room at Mill Rd, so we put the trash in 5 separate dumpsters around town.

5 bags at Paul Blutnik's Dumpser on River Rd.
14 bags and totes at the OLD YMCA Property which is owned by Garfield Township.
13 bags and totes at Dr Paul Sternhagen's dental office on 8th Street.
13 bags and totes at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
7 bags and totes at the 11th Street (Commons) Dumpster which is owned by Garfield Township.

We drove 92 miles pulling a heavily loaded trailer today to complete this project.

We will work on the next phase to complete this site on Friday the 21st of April.
We'll meet at the Mayfield Market at 9am on Friday to complte this site.

A big THANK YOU! goes out to Garfield Township for letting us use their dumpsters.

When we were done, the BRCS bought us a well deserved lunch at Burger King. Yummy!
